Painting Crown Moulding

How to Paint Crown Moulding

Tips and tricks:

Painting crown mouldings a color that contrasts slightly with the walls can give a room a crisp, tailored look and create an appealing frame for works of art. In general, avoid dark colors, which attract too much attention to the mouldings. “You want to draw the eye to the furnishings in the room, like a fancy lamp, and not the ceiling,” says color consultant James Martin

The best way to paint crown moulding is to paint it before it goes up. I found that after it is installed, painting with a angled sash brush near the ceiling and a regular trim brush for everything else works great. Although it is slow, it looks great because you take your time.

I would not spray the crown as you will need to mask off the ceiling and walls to keep over spray off. You will also need to cover the entire floor along with any furniture you can’t get out of the room and cover all openings to the room to keep over spray from getting all over your house.

How to Do It Yourself

1 Fill in any gaps between the crown moulding and ceiling or wall with the caulk. Smooth the caulk so the intersection between the crown moulding and the ceiling appear seamless. Let the caulk dry completely before continuing. Painting over the caulk is the easiest way to cover up any carpentry mistakes that may have been made prior to or during installation.

2 Tape off the edges of the crown moulding. The paint should not end up on the wall or ceiling close to the moulding.

3 Apply one coat of primer to the entire length of crown moulding. Use a beveled brush and stroke from side to side. Let dry.

4 Roll on a base coat of your chosen paint color. Let the paint dry.

5 Add a second coat of your paint with a brush, using side-to-side strokes. Let the paint dry.

6 Touch up any spots that still look uneven.

7 Remove the tape while the paint is still a little wet. Removing the tape after the paint dries completely can cause peeling of the paint from the molding.
